Exploring the Breeds
Golden Retriever Breed Information
The Golden Retriever has become a popular family dog in recent times. The
Golden was developed for use as a retriever for bird hunters, and is very
fond of the water.
Also known as the Yellow Retriever, the Golden gets along well with guests,
children and other animals. It does not make a particularly good watch dog,
due to its friendly nature.
In appearance, the Golden is similar to a Labrador Retriever, but with a
much thicker, waterproof coat. The Golden's coat can be wavy or straight,
but never coarse or silky.
Goldens reach their full height by about one year of age, and their full
weight by about 2 years. Males weigh about 67-75 pounds, and females weigh
about 60-70 pounds. Males measure about 22-24 inches at the withers, and
females measure about 20-22 inches.
Goldens love to retrieve a thrown stick, tennis ball or frisbee, especially
when water is involved.
The breed has been recognized by the AKC since 1932.
Due to indiscriminate breeding by amateurs and puppy mills, the breed has
become vulnerable to hip dysplasia, so puppies must be purchased from breeders
who have certificates to show that both parents are HD negative. Hip records
can be searched at www.offa.org
